Hilltop Virtual Academy
Lines from Larry E. Long, Superintendent –
Well our school year is off and running and a lot of good to great things continue to take place here at Hilltop. A REQUEST that I would like to share to start things off:
We are working to improve the drop-off/pick-up area in front of the school to avoid possible accidents or someone getting hit – PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU UTILIZE THE ENTIRE SPACE IN FRONT OF THE BUILDINGS. If the first car pulls up behind the police car we can unload 10 cars at once. All we need to keep open is the cross-walk area where the SRO is general located. PLEASE WATCH PULLING OUT AS THE MIDDLE LANE IS FOR MOVING TRAFFIC. LASTLY – PLEASE PARK IN THE PARKING LOT IF YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR CHILD (REN) INTO THE BUILDING. We have to keep things moving and we feel this will help greatly to accomplish a smooth transition to and from school. THANK YOU for your cooperation and understanding on this very important request.
Now highlights and happenings for HILLTOP:
Three things that we want to share with all as we are extremely proud of:
Our Second Annual – DONUTS WITH DAD – will be Wednesday, November 1, starting @ 7:30 a.m. in the main gym. This was well received last year and we are looking and hoping for an even bigger group of fathers/grandfathers/stepfathers/guardian fathers to visit and have some special time with their children along with the other dads and students.
Congrats to the 2017 Homecoming Court: Freshmen – Arleigh VanArsdalen and Joe Reamsnyder; Sophomores – Kyra Knapp and Blake Funkhouser; Juniors – Alisha Bauer and Christian McKinney; Seniors – Kara Brown and Brayden Gorsuch; Queen Johnnie Roth and King Sam Shilling.
Thanks to Damon Drewes for starting a Running Club for students in grades 4-6. Damon had good numbers and we believe the students have really enjoyed and had fun with it.
This goes along Mr. Andrew Miller hosting a Chess Club for activity period and/or before/after school. Students love it!
Congrats and Best Wishes to Mrs. Joann Kempf, assistant treasurer, who retired August 31.
Thanks to all for a well-attended Open House and mark your calendar: PARENT-TEACHER Conferences are scheduled for Monday, 10-30 and Thursday, 11-2. Both days, the time schedule is 4-7:30. The school continues to collect Box Top Labels and pop tabs to use for school related items. You can send in or drop off to either office and we will take care of the rest. This endeavor provides us the opportunity to provide some extras for our staff and students so it really is a very worthwhile project. YOUR support is greatly appreciated and our sincere compliments to Mrs. Ruth Parrott for overseeing the Box Top Label Program.
A reminder that we are well into and underway with the Food Pantry Program for our students and their families. Food items and/or monetary donations are most appreciated. We continue to honor ‘current active’ military personnel that have graduated from Hilltop on our Military Salute Board, located in the lobby area. We simply request a 5 X 7 military picture with the individual’s name, year of graduation and branch of service on the back of the picture and we take care of the rest!

BBC Golf Championship and Sectional Golf were held at Ironwood in Wauseon. Skylar Butterfield finished as Co-Medalist for the BBC with Jestin Maddox receiving Honorable Mention status. The following week at Sectionals, Skylar Butterfield qualified onto District competition and was our first golfer since 2004 to advance, so we are very proud of him and only being a junior, we are hoping for bigger and better things next year. Our Golf program is coached by Mr. Sam Maran. At this time, this is the only fall sport that has concluded their season.
Reminder, that through a Federal/State Grant to our community (and all of Williams County), we have been able to add a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) to our district half a day, every day and no doubt this has been a tremendous move for our district as it benefits our students, their families and the community. For those already working with Mrs. Welling, they will speak to how positive this service is. Our LSW is Mrs. Amy Welling and she can be reached by calling the school at: 419.924.2365 Ext. 2330 or email at: firstname.lastname@example.org. She is here from 7:30-11 Monday-Friday.
Also, the Bryan Community and Wellness Hospital has provided our school (and other Williams County Schools) with a licensed Mental Health therapist and we are very, very appreciative of this gesture as well as it also provides a lot of help and assistance to our students and their families. Ms. Paula Frye can be reached by calling the school at: 419.924.2365 Ext. 2377 or email at: email@example.com
Sunday, November 5 ends Daylight Savings Time so remember that we will FALL back an hour that day!

CONGRATS to all the Hilltop participants, the winners and those involved at the Williams County Fair participating in one way or the other. Great to see so many of our students, staff and community involved. Know a lot of hard work and family commitment goes into this yearly event and nice to see those rewarded for this dedication. To see our students/adults working, students showing or competing or to see our Marching Band perform at the Band Show, we are extremely PROUD of all!!
Space does not allow but I want to recognize all our students that are elected to various positions in our school at all the various levels. Most all of these are chosen by their peers and I believe that to be the ultimate compliment when chosen as we feel we get the true leaders to be positive, effective and have Hilltop best interest in mind. Be it Student Council, FFA, Class Officers, or the various officers of certain clubs/organizations, it is nice to have quality students in quality spots. These students all representative as the BEST of our BEST and we are proud to recognize them as well.
Don’t forget that we offer the ‘Red and White’ card to our district senior citizens that entitles free admission to HOME school athletic and other events. The criteria and application procedure is listed on our website and if any questions or inquiries, please contact Jana Griffin or myself in the Board Office. Again, once you get your card, you do not have to renew as that is automatic.
Reminder that we have placed all NEWSLETTERS, INTERIMS, GRADE CARDS and variety of PAPERWORK on the school website (http://www.hilltop.k12.oh.us) and parent portal.
